iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold8: which foldable smartphone should you choose?

The foldable smartphone market welcomes a major new competitor: Apple with its first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo. In contrast, Samsung already offers its Galaxy Z Fold8, one of the market leaders.

Both smartphones have a similar design: they open like a book to transform a compact smartphone into a large-screen device. However, their design philosophies and features differ.

iPhone Duo: the first foldable iPhone

With the iPhone Duo, Apple is entering the world of foldable smartphones.

When closed, it has an external screen measuring 5.4 inches. When opened, its inner screen measures 7.6 inches, offering much more space for watching videos, playing games or using multiple apps. Both screens feature ProMotion at up to 120 Hz.

One of the Duo’s key strengths is its design. Apple uses titanium and a specially designed hinge to ensure a smooth opening action. The inner screen also features a nano-textured finish that reduces glare and makes the fold much less noticeable.

The phone works with the new A20 Pro chip and iOS 27, specially optimised for foldable devices and multitasking. It can also be used with a USB-C Apple Pencil.

Galaxy Z Fold8: another generation for Samsung

Samsung has much more experience with foldable smartphones thanks to its Galaxy Z Fold range.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 It also features a large interior screen measuring 7.6 inches and an external screen. It works with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy and offers up to 1 TB of storage.

Samsung is placing particular emphasis on multitasking and Galaxy AI. The large screen allows you to work with several apps simultaneously, which can be particularly useful for professional use.

Both devices feature high-end camera systems, but with a different approach.

The iPhone Duo has two rear cameras, each with 48 MP, whilst the Galaxy Z Fold8 features, amongst other things, a main camera with 50 MP and a telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom. Samsung therefore retains a significant advantage for users seeking greater zoom versatility.

Apple, for its part, is focusing on image processing, video and the integration between hardware and iOS.

Battery life and performance

The iPhone Duo uses the A20 Pro chip, featuring an advanced cooling system and a dual-battery design. Apple has also announced a battery life designed to cope with intensive daily use.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 has a battery capacity of 4,800 mAh and Samsung is announcing up to 26 hours of video streaming.

In both cases, the performance is more than adequate for gaming, business applications and multitasking.

iPhone Duo or Galaxy Z Fold8: which one should you choose?

The choice depends mainly on your ecosystem and how you use your device.

The iPhone Duo is particularly worth considering if you:

  • already use the Apple ecosystem;
  • Looking for a premium foldable design;
  • Would you like to enjoy iOS on a large screen?;
  • I regularly use Apple services and the Apple Pencil.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 might be a better option if you:

  • Use Android;
  • Looking for a highly advanced multitasking solution;
  • would like more versatility in photography and zoom;
  • Use the Galaxy AI features regularly.

Two different takes on the foldable smartphone

The iPhone Duo and the Galaxy Z Fold8 are ultimately based on the same concept: to have a smartphone that can be turned into a large screen.

Samsung has the experience gained from previous generations, whilst Apple is launching its first model and is placing a huge emphasis on the integration between its hardware and iOS.

Which is the real winner will therefore depend largely on your habits. If you’re already part of the Apple ecosystem, the iPhone Duo will be particularly appealing. For Android users looking for a device that’s highly geared towards multitasking, the Galaxy Z Fold8 remains an excellent alternative.
