These mistakes are ruining your phone’s battery without you realising it

The battery is the heart of your smartphone

These days, we use our phones constantly: calls, social media, GPS navigation, photos, videos… All this usage puts a heavy strain on the battery. Although lithium-ion batteries are designed to last for several years, certain everyday habits can accelerate their wear and tear without you even realising it.

Here are the most common errors.

1. Wait until the battery runs down to 0%

Many people think you need to let the battery run completely flat before recharging it. In fact, whilst this used to be true with older technologies, it is no longer the case today.

Modern batteries perform best with regular charging. Ideally, you should plug your phone in when it reaches around 20 à 30 % battery.

2. Leaving your phone in direct sunlight

Heat is the number one enemy of batteries.

Leaving your smartphone on a car dashboard, by the side of a swimming pool or exposed to direct sunlight for several minutes can cause it to overheat and accelerate battery degradation.

Even a single prolonged exposure to high temperatures can affect its lifespan.

3. Using a poor-quality charger

Not all chargers are created equal.

Low-quality or uncertified chargers may provide an unstable power supply, which can damage the battery in the long term. It is always recommended to use an original charger or a model certified by a recognised manufacturer.

4. Using your phone whilst it’s charging

Watching videos, playing games or running resource-intensive apps whilst the device is charging causes the temperature to rise.

This extra heat can accelerate battery ageing, especially if this happens frequently.

5. Leaving your phone plugged in all the time

Modern smartphones automatically stop charging when they reach 100%, but keeping the battery fully charged for long periods, day after day, can contribute to its wear and tear in the long term.

If your phone has a function that optimised charging, it is advisable to enable it.

6. Never update your phone

Software updates aren’t just for adding new features. They often improve battery management and optimise your smartphone’s energy consumption.

How can you look after your battery?

To extend its lifespan, follow these simple tips:

  • Top up your phone between 20% and 80% where possible.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures.
  • Use a good-quality charger.
  • Please enable energy-saving modes if necessary.
  • Keep your smartphone up to date.

When should you replace your battery?

Over time, all batteries gradually lose capacity. If your phone runs out of power quickly, switches off unexpectedly or no longer lasts the whole day, it’s probably time to replace it.

And if your battery is showing signs of wear, Urbak is here to help. We replace the batteries in many smartphone models with high-quality parts. Furthermore, On all our refurbished smartphones, we systematically replace the battery when its capacity falls below 85%, to ensure you get the best possible battery life from day one.

And if you’d rather switch to a completely different phone, we also offer a trade-in service for your old device. This means you can help fund part of your new smartphone whilst giving your old phone a new lease of life.
