The long-awaited Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra confirms, based on our review, that it is the best smartphone of 2024. The model builds on the strengths of its predecessor whilst adding a few necessary improvements. Find out why, according to the URBAK editorial team, it is the best high-end smartphone available.
As usual, the 6.8-inch AMOLED display is one of the S24 Ultra’s standout features. In terms of performance, the S24 Ultra is equipped with the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, making it one of the most powerful smartphones on the market. On the software front, Samsung has announced seven Android versions for this model, making it one of the most long-lasting.
The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is also the best camera smartphone on the market. It has four lenses, including a 200-megapixel main lens. During testing, the S24 Ultra was able to run for two full days without fast charging. The phone is expensive, at CHF 1,469, but it is our top recommendation.
What if there were an alternative to Samsung at the very top end of the market? Honor has made a name for itself in 2024 with its excellent Magic 6 Pro, which boasts numerous strengths. Firstly, it boasts an attractive design with a protruding camera module, excellent build quality, IP68 certification and a good quality protective glass screen.
The large 6.8-inch AMOLED display offers excellent colour accuracy, good brightness and a 120 Hz refresh rate. Photo quality is also impressive, with a 50 MP wide-angle sensor, a 50 MP ultra-wide-angle sensor and a 180 MP x2.5 telephoto lens. The main sensor automatically adjusts its aperture according to lighting conditions.
Thanks to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, performance is excellent. The power management system allows for two days’ use, with a score of 14 hours and 51 minutes on our Viser test. The 80 W charger recharges the battery quickly.
The only downside is that the brand offers four years of software updates, which is fewer than Samsung, Google and Apple. However, thanks to its versatility, it’s an excellent alternative to the Galaxy S24 Ultra at a lower price. To find out everything about the Honor Magic 6 Pro, you can read our in-depth review.
The new Google Pixel 8 range has arrived and it’s a hit. The design is more rounded compared to the previous generation, and the models are lighter. The Google Pixel 8 Pro embodies the best of Google with a 50 MP wide-angle sensor, a 48 MP ultra-wide-angle sensor and a 48 MP 5x telephoto lens. Photos are detailed with good contrast and careful colour management, as is the portrait mode.
Our tests show that the Tensor G3 chip consumes more power than the competition, limiting the battery life of the 5050 mAh battery to one day. The 6.7-inch OLED screen offers well-calibrated colour reproduction and a maximum brightness of 1,770 cd/m². Google now promises seven years of software support – an unrivalled figure ensuring exceptional longevity. To find out more, read our review of the Pixel 8 Pro.
The new range of Apple phones, including the iPhone 15 Pro Max, brings several new features. Find out why we recommend the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Performance is powered by the new A17 Pro chip, making the iPhone 15 Pro Max one of the most powerful smartphones on the market thanks to iOS. The 6.7-inch display is stunning, with a resolution of 2,796 x 1,290 pixels at 460 ppi.
For video, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is the best choice. In terms of battery life, it lasts a day and a half despite the introduction of USB-C. Having tested the range, it’s clear that the iPhone 15 Pro Max is the best iPhone available in 2024.
The 15 Pro, which is around 200 CHF cheaper, is an excellent alternative if you’re looking for a compact, more affordable smartphone with USB-C, although its battery life is slightly shorter and its 5x telephoto lens has been replaced by a 3x one. If you’re on a tight budget, we also recommend the iPhone 14 Pro for its excellent value for money.
Google’s new Pixel range stands out as offering excellent value for money. The design has been slightly revamped with rounded edges for a more comfortable grip. Despite the asymmetrical bezels, the overall experience is excellent.
The 6.1-inch touchscreen has a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hz. According to our measurements, the peak brightness is 1,320 nits with colour reproduction that is true to life.
The Google Pixel 8a features a high-quality dual rear camera setup, similar to the Pixel 7a, with improved image processing thanks to the Tensor G3 chip. The main camera delivers sharp images and excellent detail reproduction. Colour reproduction is also excellent.
The software package, featuring Pixel Experience, is very comprehensive. The artificial intelligence features and seven years of Android updates provide an excellent long-term user experience. In our view, this is the best smartphone in terms of value for money and an excellent investment.
